Academy of FUN! is a growing social enterprise focussed on the delivery of unique, engaging activities for children aged 4 to 11 - and they want to make enterprise more social...
Life isn’t all about play. The serious, grown up stuff is equally as important if the business is to continue to flourish!
Marketing director, Lynsey Parke, is passionate about the #businessforgood campaign, “Corporate and Social Responsibility policies can become stale and a tick-box based exercise. Imagine if you could bring these policies alive; live and breathe their ethos. From skills partnerships to investment, there are a wide variety of opportunities for the business community to engage as a whole.”
If you’re still not sure what this means in practice, here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
Support and Know-How
Got a passion for social but not the time to dedicate to your own startup? Imagine if you could add value by sharing your knowledge, skills and ideas with someone who would love to learn from you.
Whether it’s a position on a board of Directors or an informal mentoring programme, your support can be invaluable.
The Practical Stuff
Consider the provision of incubator-style work/storage space. The overheads of a social enterprise can be overwhelming and the focus on achieving social missions can be difficult to maintain when a bill needs paid. Access to storage or desk space can be a welcomed by organisations trying to grow their business and gives much needed breathing space to focus on their mission.
The breadth of products and services on offer from social enterprises is vast and no doubt surprising. Take the time to research what is available in your area.
Think about your own business support needs; catering or entertainment for an event, stationery supplies, refuelling the coffee stocks.
It’s worth taking some time to research the Buy Social Corporate Challenge, run by Social Enterprise UK.
Spread The Word
From professional networking to social sharing, dinner parties with friends to a business seminar; engage your contact network and help to tell the story.
Sponsorship of a project, research or innovation can be invaluable. The level of commitment is flexible and can be readily mixed with other areas of support such as Know-How e.g. providing mentors as part of a sponsored incubation programme.
Talk to organisations about ways that your company waste can be repurposed.
For example, Academy of FUN! deliver a scrap party using scrap including cardboard boxes, random bits of plastic, ribbons or even old magazines. Imagine turning your company waste into craft supplies. Children’s imagination knows no limits.
Stock clearances can also be a great way of repurposing items destined for landfill. A recent Academy of FUN! crowdfunding campaign raised funds to buy colouring books for children living in poverty. Your trash could be someone else treasure.
The opportunities really are endless. Be creative in your thinking and let’s collaborate to make a greater impact.
