A range of cannabis sweets have been developed to help people with medical conditions, thanks to a partnership between UK confectionery expert Andy Baxendale and a US manufacturing company.
Andy, from Wigan, has helped a firm in Oakland, California, to develop the range of cannabis sweets that will be launched onto the market in America to complement its range of other medicinal cannabis products.
Known throughout the industry as The Sweet Consultant, Andy Baxendale has 23 years’ experience in the confectionery business with a Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Food Manufacture.
He was contacted by Sublime Canna, an award-winning California-based cannabis manufacturing company which promotes the positive role marijuana can play in enhancing quality of life.
Andy has just returned from a trip to the company’s headquarters in Oakland where he has been teaching staff techniques such as sugar panning, the method for adding a candy "shell" to sweets. He is due to return to California on 2 December.
The cannabis sweets are expected to be launched in America within the next few months, and flavours being considered include orange, peppermint, spearmint, and strawberry. At present, there are no immediate plans to launch the sweets in the UK.
Andy, who is a former product development manager for Chewits in the UK, said: “There is a different attitude to cannabis in much of America, as well as a recognition of its health benefits. The range of products that are available – all through dispensaries, not general sale – is astounding, and there is growing evidence that it really can promote good general health in addition to the host of other positive effects.”
Andy is a national consultant in every aspect of confectionery production, with extensive knowledge of regulation and legislation in the industry, advising companies on everything from recipes to staff training and enhanced production techniques.
Recently he has been one of the stars of the BBC 2 confectionery show The Sweet Makers.
He is currently working to set up a national academy of sweets to teach a new generation the art of confectionery production and development.
