A Worcestershire retailer, believed to be the oldest businesses in the county, has launched a range of charity t-shirts to celebrate its 250th anniversary.
Armstrongs, a family-run menswear retailer, which was founded in 1767 during the reign of George III, is selling the anniversary t-shirts in aid of St Richard’s Hospice from its Worcester store on Sansome Walk.
Simon Hyslop took over the running of the company from his father at the end of the 1980s and is the fifth generation of his family to run the business.
He said: “We are immensely proud that our reputation and quality service has helped Armstrongs stand the test of time, especially given the highly competitive and ever-evolving retail market.
“It’s safe to say we’ve seen plenty of fashions come and go over the last 250 years but we believe true style is timeless and it’s great to see an influx of younger customers styling some of our classic pieces and jackets with current trends – such as skinny jeans.
“As a long-standing Worcestershire business, we wanted to give something back to the local community as part of our celebrations.
“St Richard’s Hospice is a cause close to our hearts so designing and selling anniversary t-shirts in support of their work seemed a natural fit.
“The t-shirts are priced at £10 each and are available from our Sansome Walk store with all sale proceeds going directly to the charity.”
Armstrongs was founded in 1767 by a Scottish draper and tea merchant by the name of Preece, who came to Worcester and set up business from premises in Severn Terrace before relocating to Love’s Grove, next to the county jail.
The company has been owned and run by the same family since 1850.
Its flagship store in Sansome Walk, Worcester has been home to the business for much of its 250-year history and the company also has a second branch in Broadway.
Both stores stock the best of British and European fashions, from suits and jackets to cravats and collar studs and
Armstrongs will also hold a special preview of its Autumn/Winter collections on Thursday 2 November to officially mark the anniversary.
As well as a fashion show featuring recognisable faces from the city’s business and media communities, guests will also have the chance to win a £250 makeover as part of further fundraising activities on the night.
