Amazon has paved the way for 400 more jobs at its new UK fulfilment centre which includes roles for engineers, human resources, and IT workers.
The new facility, which will be located in Rugby, Warwickshire, will be Amazon’s seventeenth UK distribution centre.
The online retail giant said a new self-styled fulfilment centre is on the way that will open up 400 positions including engineers, HR and IT specialists.
Amazon currently has 16 UK warehouses which handle orders on behalf of customers and within its marketplace.
The firm’s biggest UK fulfilment centre is located in Tilbury, Essex, and shipped an estimated 1.2 million items last year.
The retailer's director of UK customer fulfilment, Stefano Perego, said: “We are delighted to expand our operations in the Midlands where we already have a dedicated workforce of more than 2,500 people at fulfilment centres in Rugeley, Coalville and Daventry.
“We are thrilled to begin recruitment for 400 new permanent roles in Rugby with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.
“The pay rate for permanent Amazon employees increases over their first two years of employment when all employees earn £8.35 an hour and above.
“All permanent Amazon fulfilment centre employees are given stock grants, which over the last five years were on average equal to £1,000 or more per year per person.”
Mark Pawey, MP for Rugby, said: “I was very pleased to learn that such a substantial and well-known business such as Amazon had chosen Rugby for their new fulfilment centre and that in time it will provide 400 permanent jobs, and opportunities, for local people.
“The decision demonstrates the ever-increasing strength of our thriving local economy and the confidence that business has in our area.”
In addition to Rugby, Amazon has announced plans to open three further new fulfilment centres in 2018 in Bristol, Bolton and Coventry.
