Blyth is set to welcome a new multi-million pound Lidl store, creating up to 200 construction related jobs and 10 in-store jobs once completed.

Blyth is set to welcome a new multi-million pound Lidl store, creating up to 22 construction related jobs and 10 in-store jobs once completed.

The announcement sees the supermarket giant replace its existing outlet on the former Bates Colliery site on Cowpen Road, and double its current size.

Dubbed the ‘Lidl of the Future’ the store aims to maximise efficiency and reduce its environmental impact by reducing its CO2 emission rate by over 20% when compared with buildings of the ame type, size and use.

The new store will also offer 134 car parking spaces, plus specialist spaces dedicated to disabled badges and parent-and-child parking.

North East construction and facilities management specialists, Taemar Ltd have been appointed to undertake the full design and build of the new store, with much of the works split into subcontract packages.

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, David Murphy, commented: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission, and look forward to getting started on construction with Taemar.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”

Taemar Ltd’s Managing Director, Rob Wilson said: “We are delighted to be working with Lidl on what is an important development for Blyth and a significant contract win for Taemar Ltd.”

Work will start on site at the start of this month and the new store is set to open before the end of the year.
