Founded in 2010 by Zara Neild, Zara Cakes is a bespoke bakery, offering personalised cake designs to customers. After starting the business from home whilst on maternity leave, Zara contacted Business Growth Hub, part of Manchester Growth Company, to create a strategic growth plan.
Their advisor, Tracy Eyres, recommended a shift in focus from Zara’s second store to the Bury flagship bakery and shop, supporting sustainable growth and allowing resources to be attributed to the Bury store.
Tracy also supported the company in expanding its range of services. The business now runs cupcake workshops for local schools where children are given the opportunity to create their own designs and learn the basics of cake baking.
Following Tracy’s plan, Zara Cakes tripled both turnover and profits between 2013 and 2016, as well as expanding its team and starting an apprenticeship programme.
The business has also built a strong client base with customers including Virgin, Key 103 and the Trafford Centre.
Zara Cakes plans to further expand its branch in Prestwich, whilst also looking to open a second branch in Manchester and create a specialised training centre.
Zara Neild, founder of Zara Cakes, said: “Zara Cakes was born out of my passion for baking and designing cakes, but without a business background I realised that I needed support to achieve sustainable growth. The support I received from Business Growth Hub has ensured Zara Cakes is now in a strong position for the future with lots of exciting plans in the pipeline.”
Tracy Eyres, business growth advisor at the Hub, said: “Zara Cakes is an excellent example of a business that, with some strategic guidance and direction, can flourish, and we have seen this in just a short period of time.
“Zara is a talented individual and Business Growth Hub is delighted to have contributed to helping her reap the rewards of her hard work. We look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with the business as Zara Cakes continues to grow.”
