Supermarket success for Mara Seaweed

Mara Seaweed, an Edinburgh-based seaweed brand with a mission to “nourish body and soul, has secured a contract with UK supermarket retailer Morrisons.

Two of the company’s products- Shony ® and Furikake- can now be found on the herbs and seasonings shelves at 450 stores throughout the UK, including all the stores in Scotland.

Mara founders Fiona Houston and Xa Milne discovered the nutritional benefits of Britain’s native seaweed resource while writing their 2007 book, "Seaweed and Eat It – a family foraging and cooking adventure."

Fiona and Xa subsequently developed a passion for the taste and nutritional benefits of Scotland’s seaweed and saw an opportunity to build a food brand, bringing seaweed back into modern diets.

Fiona said: "Mara Seaweed is delighted to partner with Morrisons. Mara is bringing an ancient British superfood to the Morrisons customer, in a format that’s easy-to-use and understand – a shake-on seasoning. We believe that our seaweed is relevant to consumers who want to buy products with both great taste and fantastic nutritional benefits.

"As well as enhancing the flavour of food, Mara Seaweed offers a way of reducing salt while adding a superboost of healthy essential minerals, fibre and protein."
