Scottish producer ready for 500% sales increase this Christmas

Larbert-based Scottish butcher, Malcolm Allan, has created 20 temporary roles to meet increased demand for its handmade steak pies over the Christmas period.

The firm is predicting a 500% increase in sales of its steak pies over the festive period, anticipating the sale of over half a million portions of pie through major retailers across Scotland over Christmas and New Year. It will also sell in the region of 100 tonnes of sausage product a week throughout the month of December.

The Bank of Scotland has provided increased working capital facilities to assist with the seasonal uplift in trading.

Seasonal recruits will help supplement the producer’s 200-strong roster of staff, supporting the production and packing arm of the family run business. The extra hands will also allow a back shift to be implemented, meaning the producer can work around the clock to ensure the much coveted pastry hits shelves in time for the festive rush.

Celebrating its 61st anniversary in 2015, the firm originally operated as a retail butcher with over 20 shops across Scotland. The company then changed direction in the 1990’s with a new focus on supplying to the retail sector.

Gordon Allan, managing director at Malcolm Allan, explains: “The extra hands we bring in over Christmas and New Year ensures that we continue to retain the quality we’re so well known for and maintain the reputation that we built from our days as a retail butcher. All of our steak pies are still hand filled and hand rolled, with only the highest quality Scotch Beef used. It’s one of our most loved products and we’re very happy to continue to meet customers’ high expectations at this very special time of year.”

Alasdair Swan, relationship director, Bank of Scotland, added: “It’s great to see Malcolm Allan embarking on another busy Christmas period. Being able to bring on additional staff ensures that the business can keep on delivering the highest quality produce and customer service while continuing to grow.”
