More jobs and bigger fleet for Rockin Vans as 'staycation' customers look for freedom of self-drive holiday
Two Kilmarnock-born brothers are driving their campervan business forward by heading for London.
Callum and Frazer Johnson, who have been campervan fans from a young age after many European trips with their parents in the back of this bright orange classic VW T2 campervan in the 80s set up Rockin Vans in 2008 as a ‘pick up and drop off’ hire business.
From bases at Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport, they specialise in hiring luxury 2, 4 and 6 berth campervans and motorhomes – and have seen a huge rise in the number of people wanting the freedom of a self-drive holiday.
Now, with demand from staycationers, mini-mooners and Europeans arriving in London who want to travel the length and breadth of the country, Rockin Vans is travelling 400 miles along the M6 and M40 to set up a new base at Heathrow Airport and are tripling the fleet from 15 to 45.
The move will create 22 new jobs and two apprenticeships to underpin the brothers’ expansion plans for the main business and for their design and conversion company, RV Campers, which supplies bespoke VW motorhomes for camper fans to buy. Frazer leads that side of the business, building on his experience as a trained cabinet-market who previously designed and built props at Pinewood Studios.
Callum, said: “We are delighted to take our business to the next level by expanding south of the border, making it easier than ever before to pick up and drop off hired vans around the UK, and also to be able to create new jobs and apprenticeships.
“Hiring a motorhome and setting out on your own adventure whether it’s here in the UK or if your heading off to Europe, where you have the freedom and flexibility to tour, park up and enjoy what different places have to offer is becoming more and more popular every year.
“With memories of our own family holidays, we can relate first-hand to what our customers see, experience and wake up to every day. Whether it’s beautiful beaches, mountains or cities, they are having some great adventures.”
