Downing starts work on £30m student development in Glasgow

Student accommodation provider Downing Students has started work on its second development in Glasgow city centre.

The luxury accommodation, which will feature 310 cluster bedrooms and studio flats, is due to open in September 2018 in time for a new batch of students from Glasgow’s three universities.

Works are being delivered by main contractor George Downing Construction Ltd. The £30m scheme will be located near the developer’s West Village Accommodation Block on Beith Street.

The new building will be situated five minutes from the University of Glasgow and is 15 minutes by train to the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University.

To mark the opening of its second development in the city, Downing Students has launched a competition for the public to choose the name of the new building, although they have firmly ruled out ‘Building McBuildingface’.

Instead, the developer has suggested that entrants take inspiration from the accommodation’s surrounding attractions, such as the Glasgow Riverside Museum, Glasgow Tower and the River Clyde.

Ann Lodge, joint chief executive at Downing, said: “We’re thrilled to have started work on our second student development in Glasgow. The new development is located close to our West Village scheme, which is currently the most popular student accommodation in the city. It’s also situated nearby to the universities and some of the area’s most popular attractions.

“To celebrate its launch, we are running a competition for the general public to choose the name of the building. Glasgow is a beautiful city and has a rich history and culture and we are looking for unique and creative names that will reflect the area’s heritage.”

Downing Students currently owns and operates over 5,000 student beds across nine cities including London, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Newcastle.
