Colour Elements’ Karen Finlayson is taking their CHALK app to the Innovation Showcase at Venturefest Scotland, to show how they’re making clothes buying easier for everyone.

Describe your business in no more than 100 words

Colour Elements provide luxury colour stylist services for everyday wardrobe management through digital devices.  Our apps and online outfit suggestions quickly connect customers to colours of clothes that complement their features. Time-starved professionals value a quick means of purchasing clothes that make them look great. 

The hidden green hack comes from our promotion of sustainable shopping habits through colour which prolong garment use and reduce waste. Market segmentation and lead generation occur naturally resulting in the creation of valuable data for retailers.

What prompted you to enter the Innovation Showcase competition? Describe the innovation that you’ve entered the showcase with.        

Colour Elements aims to make shopping for clothes easy, quick and successful for every customer.  We want each person to not only look great but enjoy optimal confidence so that the clothes become secondary to the person wearing them. We’re currently testing the market for the “CHALK – tailored colour” app which allows customers to message a colour expert and gain immediate personal advice when shopping for clothes. We want to showcase this innovation at Venturefest to gain immediate feedback and ideas for further improvements.

How would you describe that to a novice?

The CHALK app will help you buy clothes that make you look amazing so that you want to wear them again and again.  If you need quick advice on clothes you’re thinking of buying you can message your colour expert immediately and gain direction for instore or online purchases.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

Reaching an early adopter audience and effectively communicating the value of our offering.

What are your biggest professional achievements to date?

Being selected to be members of the inaugural Ideas Lab businesses at Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation Scottish EDGE Wildcard award June 2017

How do you feel about presenting to potentially hundreds of people at Venturefest Scotland?

Can’t wait!  It’s vital that we create a product that’s useful to customers.  We’ll initially be introducing CHALK to retail customers at pop up events during the Edinburgh Festival.  Venturefest is a fantastic opportunity to then present CHALK to businesses and gain valuable B2B feedback.

Where do you see your company in five years time?

Colour Elements will be part of the solution to the current problem of fast-fashion while ensuring that customers always buy clothes they love to wear.  Our aim is to build software that allows a global customer-base instant access to clothes in colours that complement their features. 

What advice would you give to aspiring innovators?

Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, be prepared to pivot in how you achieve that goal and expect to work hard for little return for a long time.
