Scottish firm engineers international growth with UKSE support

A Cumbernauld-based engineering firm is advancing its plans for international expansion, after unlocking a second round of funding from UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE).

Clearwater Controls Ltd made waves back in 2012 with the creation of the ‘DERAGGER’ – an intelligent device which prevents blockages in wastewater pipes.

The firm was first backed by UK Steel Enterprise, Tata Steel’s regeneration arm, in September 2017. The six-figure deal was one of the largest packages to be awarded by UKSE, which has now rolled out additional funding to support Clearwater Controls Ltd’s pilot programmes in the US, Australia and the UK.

The ‘DERAGGER’ is the only intelligent product of its kind available in the market, providing real-time detection of wet-wipe type obstructions. By removing detrimental materials before they cause harm, it increases the efficiency of pumps, which in turn reduces energy consumption and significantly cuts operational costs.

With the backing from UKSE, Clearwater Controls Ltd is now set to deliver its biggest trial to date in the US, where the device will be piloted on a complete, self-contained network. Installed on more than 40 individual pumps feeding a single treatment works, this trial will enable Clearwater Controls to gather data for an entire network of pumping stations. This is a key step for the company’s development, as historically the product has only been used on pumps prone to blockages. This new funding will help to position the revolutionary device as a preventative tool that eliminates blockages before they form, and improves overall pumping efficiency across a whole network.

The financial backing will also help to open avenues in Australian markets, where it will again fund the implementation of pilot initiatives.

Scott Webb, regional executive at UK Steel Enterprise said: “Clearwater Controls Ltd is a fantastic example of Scottish innovation being showcased to international markets, with the help of equity backing.

“We have been with the organisation through almost every step of its development, and we are proud to be contributing to its impressive growth.”

Simon Crompton, managing director at Clearwater Controls Ltd said: “UKSE has been an integral part of our journey, and we are grateful for the team’s support.

“We have great aspirations for the next few years, and the latest funding allows us to take yet another step towards our goals.”
