Scotland House member, Hotelfone tells BQ about their business and why they recommend Scotland House to others.
What is it your company does, and what makes it special?
We are a hotel reservation business that supports independent hotels at the luxury end of the market. We are contracted to support these hotels primarily in an out of hours environment.
We are a niche business offering the hotels a highly skilled team of experienced reservation professionals with no direct competitors offering this service.
Scotland has been renowned for its hospitality skills for many years and a large number of the team are based in Scotland, although our hotel clients are mainly throughout the UK. We also have two in mainland Europe.
Why did you join Scotland House and how have you used that space?
Our concept is now well recognised within the UK for the quality of service we provide, in addition to the sales performance delivered by our team. We were looking to break into the London hotel market and also for expanding the European side of our business. The membership gave us great access to both these markets in addition to an opportunity to meet and network with individuals and business who are in a similar position and in some cases have already achieved success in these markets.
I’ve mostly used it for access to the hot desking and meeting room facilities. Scotland House is an ideal place to do business with the range of facilities offered and environment created. Networking events have been very successful in securing new business.
What has it done for you and your business?
Provided me with a very detailed understanding of what some of the challenges are in expanding your business outside of the home market and delivering access to a network of people who offer support and expertise.
At one of the member events I met with a member of the Scotland House team and explained the nature of what our business does. Through his contacts and understanding of where the market opportunity lay internationally, he introduced me to Campbell - Gray Hotels, an internationally recognised hotel management company.
After a successful presentation, we have been engaged by them to support the pre-opening of their new hotel, The Machrie on Islay. We see this as a first step to establishing a long-term relationship with this company.
The irony is that we took to London to get another Scottish contract - in reality, had we made a direct approach then the outcome would not have been so successful.
Why should Scottish businesses become members?
It provides an ideal framework to get introductions to other businesses who have a lot of experience and expertise to offer. They also have great opportunities to network and engage with individuals and organisations wanting to expand and develop their businesses outside of Scotland.
