A fishy business

A fishy business

With a background in big data, Chris Atkinson set up Finygo when he spotted a way to use data relating to fishing to help anglers improve.

Tell us about your business, what does it do?

Targeted at the 85 million anglers across the world who want to take their fishing ability up a level, Finygo is a mobile fishing app for anglers who want to increase their skills, track their progress, and share their experiences. Unlike other competitors the product gives analysis on a venue-by-venue basis for the individual angler, making the experience personal to them.

What did you do before you started this business?

I used to be a solution architect for big data solutions.

What inspired you to start up?

A salmon fishing trip where I did really well, but had no real idea why. I thought about entering all my past trips, and using a weather API to enrich the data and give me some answers. I realised then that the key to any angler’s improvement is gaining insight from experience and history. The challenge was - there was no easy way of doing it already available.

How would you describe your business to your grandma?

We help anglers catch more fish by showing them trends in their past fishing trips, then they can share their fishing success with friends.

Where do you get advice, support or help?

I’ve had support from the Launch 22 incubator mentoring program. We have an advisory board of successful entrepreneurs, and we recently completed an accelerator program in London.

Finance is one of the most common barriers to starting up. How did you access the finance you needed?

We have used our existing networks to find people who got what we were trying to achieve. We also had some pro anglers see what we were doing and they invested too, always a good sign!

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

The team we have built executes flawlessly, and learns rapidly. We acquired some amazing talent. I am definitely not the smartest guy in the room at our team meetings, and that’s the way it should be.

We’re still testing and refining our product, but our acquisition costs are insanely low, and the feedback is amazing on what we are achieving.

How do you differentiate your business from others?

Our app is about self-analysis and advice from your own history. We help you find trends and success in your OWN fishing experience.

What’s it like to be your own boss?

Who am I kidding? I work for the shareholders!

Where do you see your business in 5 years time?

All the serious anglers across 14 major countries will see Finygo as the go to place to improve their fishing and share their experiences.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Enjoy the successes, treat the experience as a journey, get an advisory board of experienced people to meet with you at least once a month. These people will help you avoid making business killing mistakes!
