Monzo CEO Tom Blomfield
LinkedIn has announced its second annual Top Startups list, ranking challenger bank Monzo at the top of this year’s list, which sees only one start-up outside London making the top 25.
Monzo Bank, who topped the list for the second year running, is expected to join the coveted club of British unicorns - a start-up company valued at over $1bn - after announcing its upcoming funding round, where it will join just thirteen other companies including the likes of Deliveroo, BrewDog and Skyscanner.
Monzo is in good company with 25% of the total list also made up by other challenger banks, and over half (56%) by tech startups.
Amongst others, Babylon Health, an NHS partnered health consultation app, GymShark, a workout clothing and accessories brand and DAZN, a live sports streaming service, demonstrate the diverse range of industries flourishing across the country.
Based on a LinkedIn survey, these companies have collectively created 2,170+ new jobs in the past year (July 2017 to July 2018) with an additional 2,700+ forecast for the coming 12 months.
According to a recent LinkedIn study, over the last three months 62% of UK recruiters have seen a rise in recruiting for challenger banks.
The ranking is informed by the billions of actions, including job searches and company page views, taken by LinkedIn’s 575 million members around the world, including more than 25 million UK professionals.
It reveals the startups where UK professionals most want to work.
This year’s top ten most sought-after startups in the UK are:
Orlando Crowcroft, UK News Editor at LinkedIn, explained: “Our list this year represents a diverse range of industries, from digital marketing to fintech, and shows how British tech startups are changing everything from the way we save money to how we find a job or buy a house.
“At a time of economic and political uncertainty, these 25 companies are putting innovation and invention at the forefront of what they do.
“Our data tells us that these startups are not only seeing incredible growth but are the places where LinkedIn members want to work. It is easy to see why.”
Tara Mansfield, head of people at Monzo added: “Our internal community is so important and crucial to the success of Monzo as a whole so we’re very happy to be named in LinkedIn's 2018 Top Startups list again this year.
“In the last year, we've grown from 161 to nearly 400 employees and have just hit one million customers, so it's great to see everyone's hard work recognised today.”
