West Midlands companies named in influential Times listing

Sixteen Midland companies have appeared in the annual Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 100 league table which ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the biggest sales. Collectively, the 100 businesses employ more than 100,000 people and achieve profits of £1.5bn.

The highest-ranked company in the region is Birmingham-based 2 Sisters Food Group at No 7, with sales of £3.1bn. The Birmingham-based food producer is led by founder Ranjit Boparan, who acquired restaurant chain Giraffe from Tesco in June.

Five of the Midlands companies have appeared on the league table every year since the first Top Track 100 was published in 2002. They are JCB, the Rigby Group, Wilko, AF Blakemore, and Bowmer & Kirkland.

The 16 Midlands companies include one new entrant to the league table, Warwick-based First Utility, which is one of Britain's largest independent energy companies, supplying more than 1.5m homes.

The Midlands companies appear on the list alongside high-profile national brands such as Clarks, Dyson, Specsavers and Virgin Atlantic.

The league table is sponsored by HSBC and Linklaters, and is compiled by Fast Track, the Oxford-based research and networking events company.

Dan Howlett, head of corporate banking in the UK at HSBC, said: “At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, we can take real comfort from the dynamic private companies across the UK as recognised by the Top Track 100 league table. Firms such as these are fundamental in helping to get Britain back to business during this post-Brexit period of uncertainty and the inevitable challenges ahead.

“These businesses are ambitious, agile and passionate about what they do and will play an important part in helping to drive the British economy forward, domestically and internationally."

This year’s Top Track 100 achieved, on average, annual sales growth of 3% to a total of £173bn, and profit growth of 12% to a total of £18.7bn.
