Family firm celebrate apprenticeship success

A family firm from Huddersfield is embracing the success of apprenticeships as it celebrates its 50th year in business.

Plumbing and heating engineers Les Heywood and Son, based in Holmfirth, has seen three generations of the business begin their careers with an apprenticeship.

Owner, Les, began working as an apprentice at Tom Lockwoods in Honley, before going on to start the business in 1966.

The company is now run by son, Alan, while grandson Callum is in the final few months of his apprenticeship with the firm.

“I think it’s quite rare these days to find three generations of plumbing and heating engineers in one family business,” said Alan.

Les Heywood and Son has welcomed a number of apprentices over the years and currently employs a further two apprentices alongside Callum.

“Apprenticeships are great because you get the mix of the work with experience,” said Alan.

“That way when you’re working away from college you can put the skills to use in a practical way to adapt and deal with real life problems and situations.”

All three generations have received support from Kirklees College and continue a working partnership.
