Meet the MD: Ryan Daniels of Hydra Creative Limited

Describe your role in no more than 100 words.

Iam the owner of Hydra Creative.  As Creative Director, I oversee successful completion of the more complex projects we work on.  Quality control is hugely important.

What is it the company does?

We work with ambitious companies to strengthen and build their online presence, as well as supporting their growth through building bespoke software systems in-house.  We compliment this with graphics, video and SEO services.

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?

After finishing college, I worked at a video game company in Manchester as a 3D artist.  From there I progressed through the ranks at several companies closer to home, before going freelance.  I soon had too much work to handle by myself, and so Hydra Creative was born.  We now have 17 staff and one office dog!

What do you believe makes a great leader?

You have to lead from the front, roll your sleeves up and get stuck in with your team.  For me, being a leader has nothing to do with flash cars or shouting orders, and everything to do with working with your team to deliver excellent work and client satisfaction.

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

Building up the perfect team.  To have a strong team that work hard and get on well together and with clients is the dream – I think we’re pretty much there.

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

Owning a busy agency is 24-7, so it’s crucial that I make time to unwind away from work.  Spending time with my family – going to the cinema, playing Minecraft with my daughter, and weekends away all help to keep me sane.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A professional basketball player.  I was awarded a scholarship to play for a US College team, but injury meant those plans had to be shelved.

Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about then?

A bad attitude – both towards their work, other staff and clients.  It does more damage to a company than anything else.  I ensure my team are motivated, honest and inherently positive in their outlook – anyone who doesn’t fit the bill wouldn’t last long.

Where do you see the company in five years time?

Continuing to deliver innovative work for clients all around the UK and worldwide, demonstrating to the world how much amazing talent there is in the North of England.

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Be ready for lots of late nights.  Build a great team of people around you.  Treat everybody with respect – not just those who you deem to be important.  The business world is a small one.
