A gigabit revolution for Yorkshire businesses

A gigabit revolution for Yorkshire businesses

The North now has one of the highest concentrations of digitally connected businesses outside of London and contributes around £10bn a year in digital GVA to the UK economy.

The single biggest influence on business in the last decade has been digital, and this looks set to continue. As our digital dependency increases, it is evident that a fit-for-purpose digital infrastructure is essential. Businesses are increasingly concerned about their internet connectivity but connectivity is no longer simply about internet access, it now underpins a business’ entire operational capability.

CityFibre, a leading digital infrastructure provider, has begun a gigabit revolution across the UK and is fast emerging as a nationwide alternative to BT Openreach. In the North of England, the company has invested over £70m in next-generation digital infrastructure and has major metro networks in 11 Yorkshire cities. CityFibre now owns and operates over 1,100km of network infrastructure in the region.

Businesses based in York, Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield are already taking advantage of CityFibre’s superior, high capacity, pure fibre infrastructure providing them with speeds up to 100 times faster than the national average. With a fully future-proofed network, businesses across the region no longer have to struggle with a connection that is unable to keep up with their digital requirements.

With over 50,000 more small businesses in Yorkshire than in 2010, it’s clear to see that the region’s business economy is thriving. But how can we ensure that northern businesses continue to succeed and that the region remains an attractive location for inward investment?

One of the first companies to sign up to the service in Huddersfield was international manufacturer Polyseam; with a sister company in Norway they required ultra-fast fibre connectivity to allow seamless and cohesive working internationally.

Andrew Sutulic, Manufacturing Director at Polyseam, commented:

"Our business relies heavily on good connectivity between here and Norway. Since we installed the gigabit connection we have seen a dramatic improvement in data speeds; we are now able to transfer files between both countries at incredible speeds and our remote users are now able to log in effortlessly.

Previously our internet connection was a shared service which meant our speeds were always limited. Now we have our own private, dedicated and secure connection, we can work stress free knowing that we have spare capacity with an unlimited data package as well as fantastic speeds."
