Meet the MD: Jon Newall of Lockyers

After beginning his career as a junior at insurance broker Lockyers, Jon Newall has worked his way up the ranks to become managing director. He caught up with BQ to share his story....

Describe your role in no more than 100 words.

No 2 days are ever the same! A key part of my role as managing director is to define the strategic direction of Lockyers to achieve our ambitious growth and profit targets.

Growth will come through existing clients, gaining new clients and identifying new market opportunities for our products. I don’t like sitting behind a desk all day.

Lockyers pride ourselves on delivering the highest levels of personal service plus great value for money and I enjoy working on the front line, having regular contact with both insurers and clients.

 

What is it the company does?

Lockyers are a leading, independent insurance broker for businesses in Yorkshire and a national specialist in insuring manufacturers and wholesalers and the leisure industry.

The company was established in 1981 and we now have access to over 250 insurers. We love a challenge and through many years of experience and relationships with insurers we can often succeed in placing high risk insurance where others fail.

Where did you start your career?

As an office junior at Lockyers!

 

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far.

I initially worked for Lockyers for 4 years then left to work for other insurance brokers for several years. I finally bowed to the inevitable and went back to Lockyers and liked it so much I bought the business in 2000! 

 

What do you believe makes a great leader?

A great leader must inspire and motivate their team. 

They must communicate a clear direction for the business by specifying goals, making sure that everyone is clear how their role contributes to those goals and that individuals have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.

 

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

Managing the growth of the business (way above target/projections) particularly in recent years – a great challenge to have.

We’ve doubled the size of the team, moved to new premises and invested in technology so Lockyers can give our clients the best possible service and prices.   

 

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

I try to keep clear boundaries between work and home life. 2 young children, moving house and a wedding to plan definitely takes my mind off work!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Anything but an insurance broker but it’s in the blood and I am now the 3rd generation of my family to work the industry.

 

Any pet hates in the workplace?

People who don’t do what they said they will do, if you make you must meet commitments. I also get frustrated by people wasting time through not taking the most direct approach to a business issue.  

 

Where do you see the company in five years time?

I would like to see the Lockyers as twice the size we are now through organic growth and acquisition of other brokers.

 

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

People are a key asset in any business. Train your team to the highest standards so they could work anywhere in their industry but treat them well enough that they want to stay.
