Alfie and Fergus ready to greet visitors
Online clothing retailer Banana Moon has not one, not two, but three furry friends in the team. Managing director Alex Grace tells BQ why having workplace pets helps keeps the team calm and brings some fun into the office.
What does your company do?
Banana Moon is an online Personalised Clothing supplier
Introduce us to your workplace pet… What’s their name, and what kind of pet are they?
Alfie is a Welsh Springer Spaniel. And we also have Fergus the Cockapoo and Meg the Westie here too who belong to Nikki, our design director, and Katherine, one of our designers.
How did they become your workplace pets?
Well Alfie applied for the job, came in for interview and was offered the job straight away!
What’s it like having an animal around the place?
It’s great, there is always something silly going on and it is always nice for a little break in between tasks to go and stroke the dogs and see what they’re up to. Visitors love them, and they love visitors too!
What made you decide to bring pets into your workplace?
It was an easy one, how could we leave him at home?
Does it have an effect on stress, and on how the whole team works together?
Definitely, it always brings laughter to the office and sometimes into stressful situations, you can be discussing an issue in the board room and all of a sudden, they just start scratching at a cardboard box and making a den to sit in.
Any unexpected benefits? Or, indeed, pitfalls?
For us nothing unexpected, but for the dogs yes…When our suppliers visit, they don’t like to leave the dogs out and always bring them treats and chews.
Who’s responsible for walking, feeding, cleaning… any of the ‘less popular’ jobs?
We are responsible for the feeding and cleaning, but walking is done by their beloved best friend in the world, Rob, who is their dog walker every day. Come rain or shine the tension pre-walk is palpable and the excitement when Rob arrives is like nothing you have ever seen…. pure carnage
Ever find it a distraction?
Not really, they are very well behaved, and they know when to just shut down and sleep when everyone is busy. Sometimes the phone can be difficult if they are make a noise, but our customers understand that is part of our personality as a business and we have a laugh about it.
What would you tell other people who were reluctant to take in an office pet?
Don’t hesitate, it’s great fun!
