A sports education start-up has enjoyed success at an awards ceremony recognising the achievements of social enterprises in Yorkshire.
Sporting Age, based at the John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield, was named winner of the Tech for Good category at the 2019 Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber (SEYH) Awards.
The Tech for Good award recognises technological innovation which creates social impact, and how the creative use of software has benefited the community in which it is used.
Sporting Age was founded in 2016 by physical education experts Shaun Fox, Andrea Springthorpe and Jonny Nolan. It uses data taken from a series of pupil benchmarking tests to produce stage-appropriate PE lesson plans that ensure schoolchildren are being taught at the correct level of ability in PE, helping schools and teachers tackle obesity and encourage participation in physical activity.
In January, the company was granted £75,000 funding from the £3m social investment loan fund, Sporting Capital, to help grow its reach across Yorkshire and the wider UK throughout 2019.
Sporting Age founder and director, Shaun Fox, said: “Winning this award less than a year after officially launching Sporting Age is fantastic. It demonstrates the level of detail that goes in to ensuring our platform is the best it can be.
“Combined with our recent funding grant, this accolade will help us to grow our reach to more schools across Yorkshire and then the wider UK.”
The SEYH Awards are organised by Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber. The organisation exists to promote and connect social enterprises in the region.
The UK Social Entrepreneur Index, sponsored by UBS, is a celebration of social entrepreneurship across the UK.
Open to social entrepreneurs tackling a social or environmental issue at any scale, entrants will act as beacons of inspiration for others to encompass positive social impact.
