Gareth James, partner and producer at Clockwork Eye Video Productions talks to BQ about his business and why he recommends Digital Enterprise and the Digital Knowledge Exchange.
What is it the company does?
We are a video marketing company, specialising in creating marketing strategies, concept designs and distribution to aid businesses in marketing themselves more efficiently and effectively.
We also provide training to businesses and marketing departments to help them better understand how to make better use of video content.
Describe your role in no more than 100 words
The best way to describe our business and my role in it is to think of a Michelin star restaurant. I am the maître d’ and it is my job to make sure that our clients are receiving the very best service.
I am responsible for the marketing of Clockwork Eye and also the admin.
However, my primary role is concept design and building strategies that work to achieve the goals of our clients.
How did you come to do the work that you do?
Now this is a tale. After serving in the British Army for 12 years I went into IT.
However, I had always wanted to do some acting and now that I didn’t have the commitment of the military I started doing theatre.
This led to some extras work, that led to small bit parts on TV. At the same time, I started a small film group and we made silly little films and adverts to enter competitions.
I was still working in IT at this point and had become self-employed, as a result of redundancy, and I started to notice the trend in video and saw that it was the best direction for myself as I enjoy the whole marketing concept design and creative combination.
So I closed my IT business and started Clockwork Eye with Mick Sugden who used to teach film and media and was also made redundant. That was over seven years ago and we haven’t looked back.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
Helping people understand how to use video better. I started doing workshops so that we could dispel any myths or misconceptions that people might have had about video.
Unfortunately, the digital marketing world is full of snake oil salespeople and we found that businesses had been talked into buying videos that were no use to them from a marketing perspective. This annoyed me considerably.
This is why we approached Digital Knowledge Exchange, so that we could put workshops on for them and also become mentors to help them educate people about digital marketing and also video marketing.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
With the developments that we are making now, I honestly believe that in five years we will be running a full-service marketing agency with video as its primary delivery system. This isn’t only being driven by our ambition but also by technology and the internet.
Why did you take part in Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange?
Knowledge is power and we got involved because we wanted to learn from a reliable source. We also wanted to be part of that reliable source so that people were better informed.
What has the Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange done for your business?
More than I could have imagined. There are some very clever people involved in Digital Knowledge Exchange and through attending workshops and also meeting some of the other trainers, we have developed a better understanding of so many facets of the digital world.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
Every day is a school day. Get out and meet people, network and attend workshops. You might be great at what you do, but business is so much more than that.
What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?
Don’t tell people what you do, tell them how you can help them.
Why would you recommend Digital Enterprise or the Digital Knowledge Exchange
Just the ability to access such a massive network of knowledge and information and to meet people who want to and enjoy helping others.
