Jamie Marshall, director of Everon Ltd, talks to BQ about the need to make tough decisions quickly, the importance of listening and learning, and why he recommends the Digital Enterprise to other businesses.
What is it the company does?
Managed IT Services for SMEs.
We also provide web development and Google AdWords marketing.
Describe your role in no more than 100 words
My current role involves a little bit of everything. From helping with client work when we are busy, to working on elements to help drive the business forward.
At the minute we are focusing mostly on our own systems and processes with the aim of making our business more scalable. As we have been growing quite fast over the last 18 months, we want to ensure that we can scale to meet the increased demand that we are currently seeing.
How did you come to do the work that you do?
From an early age, I knew I wanted to run a business, but didn’t really know what industry this would be in. As I got older, I found that I had a natural talent for problem-solving and this was a good fit for the IT sector.
During my A Levels, I started working part-time with a local IT company. This then turned into a full-time position after I finished my education and I grew into the role. This is where I met my current business partner, who also worked for the same firm at the time. In 2008 we partnered up and started Everon.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
I would say the biggest challenge is the constant need to learn and adapt.
Being from a technical background and not a business background has meant I have had to learn about business management and strategy alongside other roles. This was especially challenging in the first few years when I had to perform a full-time technical role as well as the other business management aspects.
Fortunately, our growth over the last few years and our ever-expanding team has eased this, and I now have more time to spend running and managing the business.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
I would like the company to be in a position where we have a scalable structure that can help us grow efficiently as needed. We should also have a management staff layer that helps to ensure we maintain our high-quality standard levels or work. This would leave me to fully concentrate on the running and growth of the business.
We should also have fully independent teams that can run self-sufficiently for managed IT services, cybersecurity and web development.
Why did you take part in Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange?
We took part in the Digital Enterprise as it was a great way for us to kickstart our growth plans. The Digital Enterprise plan enabled us to hire another member of staff with training and start to implement some of the systems we use today for our internal workflows and processes.
What has the Digital Enterprise or Digital Knowledge Exchange done for your business?
The Digital Enterprise has helped kickstart our current growth. It helped give us a better understanding of our business and industry, whilst giving us the tools to be more efficient and targeted.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
I would say that it’s a lot more work than people really realise. From the outside, people see the positives from running a business, but they never really see the negatives, like the late nights, stress and responsibility.
I would also say that you must always be open to listen to others, learn and adapt as there is always someone to learn from.
What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?
That there are always challenges to overcome; they just change as you grow, so you never stop learning and problem-solving.
And also, that there are times when you have to make decisions or choices you don’t want to. Its better in the long term to make these decisions/changes quickly rather than delay them.
Why would you recommend Digital Enterprise or the Digital Knowledge Exchange
I would recommend the Digital Enterprise for any company that wants to look forward and make positive changes. From grants to education there is something there to benefit any company.
Although we had an idea of the direction we needed to move forward, the Digital Enterprise enabled us to do this faster and more efficiently than we would have been able to otherwise. We have also been able to recommend the Digital Enterprise to our clients and help them move their businesses forward.
