Archie is head of security for Crowther Chartered Accountants. Based in Yorkshire, he ensures that the team and clients alike are greeted with a waggy tail and lots of cuddles, if they want them.
What does your company do?
Crowther Chartered Accountants comprises of 20 local professionals who provide accountancy, taxation, audit and bookkeeping support to clients across Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.
We undertake a partner-led approach and help startups and established businesses to ensure they reach their full potential, identify new opportunities, as well as understand potential financial obstacles and pitfalls.
And introduce us to your workplace pet… What’s their name, and what kind of pet are they?
Archie is an adorable cavoodle. A cross between a poodle and a cavalier king charles spaniel. He’s eight years old.
How did they become your workplace pet?
Managing director, Steve Crowther and I commute from York most days so it wouldn’t have been fair to leave Archie home alone all day.
We did consider doggy daycare, but everybody in the office loves having him around so much.
What’s it like having an animal around the place?
We refer to Archie as our ‘head of security’ as he’s always first to greet our visitors and clients when they come to see us. He’s so friendly and has really become part of the team. It’s hard to imagine a day in the office without him now. He has quite a calm nature about him and I think this adds to an enjoyable working environment.
What made you decide to bring pets into your workplace?
We’re animal lovers at Crowther, so it doesn’t seem unusual for us to have a workplace pet. It seemed like a natural thing to do; Archie has been with us as we’ve grown as a business.
Does it have an effect on stress, and on how the whole team works together?
Definitely, Archie certainly helps to reduce stress. A quick pet and a cuddle and all is well in the world. Although, there is often jealousy within the team because Archie definitely has his favourites!
Any unexpected benefits? Or, indeed, pitfalls?
Thankfully Archie is very well-natured but he does need a lot of love and can become quite clingy. He often wants to join our meetings which is not always appropriate!
Who’s responsible for walking, feeding, cleaning… any of the ‘less popular’ jobs?
It’s a bit of teamwork actually. Our lovely payroll assistant, Chloe, treats him to a lunchtime walk every day. I feed him. Our senior accountant, Chris looks after everything when Michelle is out of the office. And on the rare occasions Archie is poorly, Chris will do all the dirty work, bless him!
Ever find it a distraction?
Archie blends into the environment really well; there is always somebody around to give him love and attention and so he’s never a real distraction. He also gets plenty of walks, so most of the time when he’s in the office he’s quite restful.
What would you tell other people who were reluctant to take in an office pet?
I would certainly recommend having an office pet – the benefits definitely outweigh any cons. At Crowther, we try to remain community focused and part of that is creating a friendly and enjoyable workplace for both staff and clients. Archie really adds to these values.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Lots of our clients enjoy being greeted by Archie, but we do understand not everybody is a dog lover so we only introduce him to the clients we know will be happy to meet him.
